feb fit club comes to an end...cheers to us!

Congratulations to all who joined and for those who shared. This has been one month, that's it! I enjoyed dedicating this month to fitness because it is about awareness. Regardless of what we all set out to do and what we actually ended up doing, I know that we were able gain awareness about our bodies.

This month I am proud to say that I did 7 yoga classes. The first class I took was more than four years ago and I probably had only gone to 7 classes all together before this month. Two great successes- when I'm in Downward Dog (fundamental yoga pose) my heals can almost touch the ground now! That's inches closer to the ground than when I started! #2- my lower back doesn't hurt anymore. I would have minor pains after I would go on my runs or after work and now I don't! awesome, huh. Also...I guess there's a third success...this month has been especially hard at work and I've just been in a better mood and more able to handle what was thrown my way. And, it's not like it's just a burst of energy, it's more like a steady, strong, balanced approach which makes me feel like I have more of a handle on things.

I'm super proud of all of you and I love that I have this set of family and friends who I know can support each other for greater success! I love you all.

Let's keep it up.

134/82

It was a good morning and a great visit with my doctor! It's been a month since I've seen her and I must say she was quite proud of me. I told her that I took her advice very seriously last time and made some changes. She chuckled at the thought of someone actually taking a doctor's advice seriously.
My blood pressure went down and so did my weight. I lost six pounds and my blood pressure is down to a non-medication level of 134/82. The goal is to get it down to 120/80 so these are encouraging numbers.
Fitness February is winding down and I must say that I'm proud of myself as well. I'm proud of all of us for taking the steps to change, learn and grow.
Thank you to everyone for your encouragement and support. It is truly helpful and appreciated.
Fitness March is just around the corner and there are more goals to make.
I hear ideas of a family garden behind my parents house and I couldn't be more ecstatic of that possibility. Ralna, Justin and I got really excited over the thought. Last year, my mom had a "Harvest Party" and Justin suggested the garden as a "Spring Awakening" to plant and nurture before our mom's 2nd annual Harvest Party.
Anyways, just some ideas to throw out there and think about.
The week is winding down and I hope it is going well for everyone.

Inspirational Movie on Running and Other Good Links

Thought everyone would enjoy watching this. I immediately thought of Alita, Ralna and Ralphe for this subject because they have been running marathons for awhile. Anyway, i thought all you guys could carry on this type of work in your neighborhoods etc. This was a documentary i saw on KQED tonight. This type of work could keep you motivated for a long time. You woud be working out kids while working yourself out and helping the planet in the process, pretty much the highest calling. Check it out here:

http://www.kqed.org/arts/programs/trulyca/episode.jsp?epid=205906

and here is the link to buy the DVD if your so inclined:
http://www.runnershighfilm.com/

Also, here is a link to that book i bought that i thought everyone could benifit from, especially those of us that don't want to pay for a gym:

http://www.amazon.com/Mens-Health-Home-Workout-Bible/dp/1579546579/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1266819081&sr=1-1

And here is the link to that Yoga PDF online:
http://www.theyogaspot.com/PDF%20Files/Rama%20Yoga%20international%20article.pdf

Anyway, hope everyone is sticking with it. This will be my last week working out at a gym for awhile, i'm going to go it on my own at home. I should be able to pull it off i have been doing it a long time now. Take care and have a good week!

What's happening, no postings!?! Today, Ralph & I went to nearby Doyle park. I had heard that people gather there for Tai Chi from 8:30-9:30 and it gave Lexus the chance to socialize with other dogs. People have been coming there for Tai Chi about 20 years and this was the first time I had heard of it! I've always wanted to learn and because it is hard for me to do any high impact exercise (weak feet, knees, back!), I thought this would be my speed! Like slow dancing! I had a wonderful time. I've been using the Swiss exercise ball and it has helped my back tremendously. Ralph was in a golf tournament with his brother, Rene, and they did pretty good...and they walked! What's happening with everyone else?

D4E website

http://www.d4e.net/
This website paid for our new washer, check it out...Ralph and I worked together to create this site (unheard off).
Here is a very special quote that came my way recently:
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

FebFitClub Day After Valentines ; )

Hope everyone had a happy healthy Valentines Day!

Did all my stuff today, i am now on a tandem bike for this week at least until i can figure out a way to make the Rowing machine keep time. Keeping with my goals so i'm feeling good. Last week i only worked out 4 days, so i suppose i was 70-30 as Sam, says.

I'm hoping to start adding new floor exercises at the end of the month. I highly suggest everyone check out that book i put in a previous post, great stuff in there.

Anyway, everyone hang in there and have a good week!

Happy Valentine's Day, Happy V Day, Happy Chinese New Year! How fitting it is to start a new exercise routine, eating more consciously, choosing a new way of living in the "love" month. Loving ourselves enough to think we are deserving of a better life. Good for us! And if you need to know that someone loves you and supports you in this endeavor, I do, we all do!

Happy V Day! Ever since I read the Vagina Monologue's, I have not forgotten this special time of the year that should be dedicated to women. Love the women in your lives, support them, and most especially do not violate their spirit, mentally or physically.

With all the exercising and activity, also remember that rest is vitally important. Choose a day to rest and enjoy the fruits of your labor. It took God six days to make the world and even God rested on the seventh day!

Much Love and Success in the week to come.

Struggle!

I'll be in honest, this week has been a struggle for me. I haven't done anything since Sunday which makes it more difficult to want to get out there again. I have a plan to do my C25K after work today. Hopefully, now that I've written about it, I have to do it.
My other goal to eat better, reduce my salt intake and hopefully add a lot more fruits and veggies to my diet is actually easier than I thought it would be.
I've done much better on this front. I'm making better decisions and cooking a lot more. I love the quinoa, soups and my new no salt seasoning! Not using salt or only using very little of it is also changing my pallete. I had some tortilla chips yesterday and they seemed really salty to me! Crazy how that can happen.
I hope you all are powering through week 2 of Feb.Fit.Club and I hope to finish my week stronger than I started it.

Wow - Ralphie - congrats on your new Personal Best!! That is awesome (especially with the fact that you felt great during and after!!) and something to be so proud of! It really inspires me to kick up my running another notch and go for that 1/2 marathon goal that has sort of always been in the back of my head - but fear has kind of always kept it there. Ralna and I talked about doing a 12K in the next couple of months - and maybe I will set a 1/2 marathon goal for myself for the end of summer. who else is in??? ;)

For Febfit - I have comitted to running about 12-15 miles a week, at least one yoga class (2 ideally), and my kick-ass Jillian Michaels DVD (which seriously gets me sweating like nothing else) for strength training at least 2 times a week. My week one went great - I am holding it down for the folks on Mission Blvd. - though Tim is doing some great work on his iron gym (still working on getting him out running with me - but it is pretty hard on his hip) - and my Mom has made it out for a couple walks. I almost reached one small goal of mine already - to run up Fountaingrove all the way (which I hadn't done since before I had Jax) and I almost did it (just minus the EXTREMELY steep part which is kind of tough on my knees). Looking to run the whole thing hopefully by the end of Feb! Ralna - you are doing this with me girl!!

As Ralna blogged - week 2 has started out great too - we had a febfit rendevous here in S.R. that was really fun - the Zumba class rocked - the Latina girl in me came out in full force!! So much fun - thanks for introduction A. Juanit - I definately will be coming more often!!

Everyone seems to be doing so awesome - this support rocks - thanks Ralna for starting it all up - and getting our butts moving!

I hope everyone had a great start for week two! I'm in bed blogging... before 11!

I wanted to Thank everyone for their support on the Surf City Marathon! It was an amazing event! 20,000 runners plus all the fans and volunteers made this the biggest race I've participated in! For all the women, you were represented by being 64% of the runners! Go Ladies! So congrats Alita for representin! (I'll let her blog about her experience.)
I have to say if it wasn't for FebFitClub, and the twins in pink, I probably wouldn't have been able to get my PB (Personal Best) this race. I felt good during and after the race, which was a good change for me. (Reminisce of Marin 09) It was amazing to see so many people of all ages gathering! There were bout 4 to 5 stages with bands playing music throughout the course, so no need for headphones. Had great views from snow capped mountains to waves crashing, and did i mention 64% of the runners were women! I call them "pace setters". But most of all i was able to enjoy the experience with Chris, Jaime, and Alita. Plus all of the FebFitClub!
Week 2 I started out by resting and stretching... then advil, then stretching, and more stretching and more advil. Excited to get back in it tomorrow! I think I need to have something else to work toward now... Any ideas?, events?, let me know! Maybe FebFitClub can create our own event... You know, another excuse to get together and party!
Hope everyone has a good week! Goodnight.

Day 8

ZUMBA...ZUMBA...ZUMBA

I took feb fitness on the road and met up w/ Sara in good 'ole Rose. We planned on a zumba class which is a class that Auntie Juanit regularly goes to. People...Zumba is so much crazy fun. (crazy, sweaty, ass shakin' fun) It's pretty much a salsa club without the tequila and smelly men, just sweaty, smiling women!! Props to Auntie Juanit cause she rocks at this high energy class. The instructor even pulled us up to dance in front of the class and A Juanit said that this was the first time she was called to dance in front. Whenever you come into town, you gotta do this w/ her.

These folks up here are funny cause then Sara and I pull up to the Bush Street houses and mom is walking Lexus and is so on the go that she won't even stop to say hi to us! Dinner at Auntie Alice's was the perfect meal to a long and rewarding day.

Happy Monday to all. I hope you all enjoyed the Super Bowl. Again, SR knows how to do it cause the Bush house had a house full of people, a table full of food, CRAB, wine, beer and on to singing and more wine. Your super bowl now seems tame, huh. They were recovering here.

It's week two...good luck to all and keep up all the good work!

FebFit Club Day 8

Hello everyone, hope you had a great weekend. Go Saints, cool game no matter whose side you were on.

Tired today, hard to get back to it but I did my new stuff today regardless. I feel better for it, I knew I would and that is why I keep doing this stuff. Working out is sort of the antithesis of drinking or doing drugs or whatever. With those you know you’re going to hurt the next day, with this you know you will feel better after and maybe hurt a bit too. ; )

The Elliptical is a killer I guess because your arms are moving too, hard to say. I did my Pilates sit-ups which are much harder than regular sit-ups. Lookup, “Pilates Rollup”. Great sit-ups, I have seen Fireman where I work out do them (surprised!). My left arm continues to hurt because of my extra work out on it, added some weight too since it’s a new week. Anyway, did what I set out to do at the end of last week.

BTW, for all the men in the group I bought a good book this weekend. I want to quit paying to work out since I have the discipline and I wanted to get some new ideas for working out at home. So, check out this book, look it up online it's called: The Men's Health Home Workout Bible (over 400 exercises, No Gym Required). ISBN 1-57954-657-9

There is probably a newer book out, this particular book is from 2003, but it has everything I need in it, so I bought it and it didn’t cost that much. Also, it had a bunch of the exercises in it that we were doing in the Pilates class I was in, so all of you guys that don't want to pay a gym check it out, good ideas in here. Also, I’m sure women would benefit from it as well, a bunch of good floor exercises in here that like I said we did in Pilates, and they were all women in those classes.

Anyway, happy FebFitClub Day 8!!

Day 6

I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

~William Ernest Henley

Something inspiring as we enjoy our weekends! I watched "Invictus" and I really liked the last two lines of this poem.

Friday, February 5, 2010

I was watching my fav, Oprah on dvr. She had Dr. Oz, Bob Greene, & another doctor all talking about diabetes. Eating the right foods, exercise, and getting tested. Couple things caught my attention... waste size should be less than half your height, no white foods (heard that before), and exercise- no negotiation! I like that... no negotiation. Like "Just do it", no excuses or ELSE! This is what we need to do for ourselves to be healthy and break the family cycle of diabetes, high blood pressure, and anything else that may ail us.

What has amazed me, is this simple idea has been contagious! A. Alice went on a walk around the block with me this afternoon! U. Roy has been doing sit ups and back to the golf course. Ralph (Dad) all of the above and more. As for myself, walking in the afternoon and taking Lexus for his evening walk. And eating brown rice again!

Ralph, Alita, Chris... have a good run on Sunday. to everyone... good 1st week!

Day 5

I started a new thing. I'm trying to incorporate as much walking into my day as possible. Instead of taking the shuttle from work to the bus, I walk. There's still some daylight and it's about a 20 minute walk. Stretching starts tonight as well. Happy Friday and enjoy the weekend!

FebFitClub Day 4

No post today, weird i didn't expect that i would be doing the posting?

Well, did my whole system today again, the body is hurting today. OUCH! up to twenty pushups, but really the thing that is hurting me is the weights and doing 2 out of 3 of the reps on only my left side. OUCH!!!!!!, i think its working. LOL

Hope everyone is hanging in there. Keep going we can do it! Next week i will add my abs to the mix. L8 on the cardio is a killer as well, now i know how lance armstrong feels. LOL

Well, take care and give us some posts. Have a good weekend!

Day 3

I finished my first workout of C25K: a 5 minute warm-up walk, then alternated 60 seconds of jogging and 90 seconds of walking for a total of 20 minutes, and a 5 minute cooldown walk.
I am both humbled and elated.
Although many of you have said you wanted to step-up your routines or do more, I think I might have to in order to stay on a 9 week schedule to a 5k!

I am both humbled and elated. I admire all of your runners out there...I will be thinking of Alita, Ralphi, Chris and Jamie when you're running Half Marathons & Marathons in Huntington Beach. For me and in honor of you participants, I will do my walk/run workout as well!

Night 2
I've got 15 minutes to post this...
One of my goals is to be "in bed" before 11pm four nights out the week. I'm interpreting that as being in bed but maybe not asleep. Is that cheating?
Anyway just wanted to let everyone know Alita and I had a good workout this evening. We feel like champs having done two days of our goals. For some reason it's making us want to do more. What a bunch of over achievers! Or it's just giving us time to slack off later! LoL! (I'm txting this post for he first time. What wonderful technology.) hope everyone had a great day! Gotta run. Got seven minutes to be in bed! Goodnight!

Day 2

There will be a post for every day so you can comment on your work out, accomplishments, your aches and pains, and new experiences. You'll be putting it out there to your fellow bloggers to say that you did it!

Thanks Uncle Norbie for starting us off.

FebFitClub Day 1

Well, i'm happy to say i'm well enough to finally work out, so today i did my interval training cardio that i haven't done in about 6 weeks. If anyone is interested in trying it here is what i do, not really anything fancy.

i do it on a stationary bicycle. I set the bike to random program for 30 min's at level 7 of 10, so then I go as fast as i can for one min, and then I take it easy for the next four min. So, basically the routine is fast at 1min, 5min,10min, 15min etc. so you only go fast 6 times... at least in this system. Anyway, it gets the heart going and personally i like to sweat so thats it.

Then i did my morning and evening pushup's, i have been adding one a day, so i'm up to sixteen twice a day now.

Then i did some weights becaues my arms have been feeling weird lately, i think i'm loosing muscle or something since i have been sick for so long. so, i did 3 repitions for 3 diffrent weight machines. My reps are in 8's.

It felt great and i didn't even cough. Then i stretched which is my favorite part. my plan is to do this for the next three days, and then hopefully next week. i will start doing pilates again. The idea is to do cardio 2-3 times a week and do pilates 2-3 times a week. So, we shall see.

anyway, hope everyone enjoyed there first day. i know i did and good luck to everyone!

Motivation vs. Inspiration

I found a new goal that will help me with my goals for Fitness February! My new goal is to read the blog every day. It is great "MOTIVATION". (Which is the point of the blog anyway.)

I was watching ESPN and a reporter was interviewing a professional football player and she asked if "this" (not relevant) was MOTIVATION leading into the game. The pro bowler replied, "MOTIVATION? MOTIVATION is for grade schoolers!" I felt like he was talking to me, so then I yelled back, defensively, (at the TV), "Hey, I'm not a grade schooler! (pause)Yeah! MOTIVATION is for kids!" Now I can't hear that word without thinking of the pro bowler and I realized, that is the attitude I need. Basically he was saying I'm a grown ass man, I shouldn't need to be motivated, I just am!

So, I'm replacing motivation with INSPIRATION. Reading everyone's blogs and comments is not only entertaining but INSPIRING! It INSPIRES me to work toward my goals and to create new goals in other aspects of my life besides fitness! So I will say it wasn't motivation that got me up at 5:50 this morning, I was INSPIRED by Fitness February to get an early jump! Plus I was excited to make oatmeal and drink coffee! Thanks cousin (Alita)!

I would like to thank all the participants and bloggers especially RO (the postcard is awesome! I can use a couple more to place everywhere...for INSPIRATION!) Everyone, please keep posting! It is great to hear about what people are doing this month!
